GLAAD was formed in New York in 1985 and began by protesting The New York Post's blatantly offensive and sensationalized stories about AIDS. Its mission was to improve the public's attitudes toward homosexuality and put an end to violence and discrimination against lesbians and gay men.

The Los Angeles chapter was formed in 1988, and early on began to educate Hollywood's entertainment industry on the importance of more accurate and realistic portrayals on the screen.

Subsequent chapters have been formed in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, San Diego, San Francisco and National Capital Area.

This is an excellent and powerful organization that has done a lot, and continues to do so, for the GLBT community.

Since its inception, NGLTF has been at the forefront of every major initiative for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. In all its efforts, NGLTF helps to strengthen the gay and lesbian movement at the state and local level while connecting these activities to a national vision of change.

NGLTF is the front line activist organization in the national gay and lesbian movement. As such, it serves as the national resource center for grassroots lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organizations that are facing a variety of battles at the state and local level -- such as combating anti-gay violence, battling Radical Right anti-gay legislative and ballot measures, advocating an end to job discrimination, working to repeal sodomy laws, demanding an effective governmental response to HIV and reform of the health care system and much more.

GALZ GALZ was formed in 1989 to provide gay men and lesbians in Zimbabwe with a network to facilitate communication within the gay community.

By default the network also provided a space for bisexuals and other alternative people who sought more broad-minded company.

Primarily concerned with providing the community with social events, the organization kept a low profile at its onset. However, with the growing awareness of the needs of the gay community as a whole within the country, GALZ initiated a programme of outreach which inevitably led to the organization's "outing."

Presently GALZ' aim is to network broadly with other human rights organizations, the women's' movement, AIDS initiatives and regional associates. The objective is to increase awareness of gay rights in as broad a forum as possible thereby integrating these rights with the other basic human rights for which civil society is currently battling.
